Salt Bath Nitrocarburizing (SBN, Arcor)
ARCOR® is a trade name of Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (FNC) advanced process in molten salt bath followed by an oxidizing process to add value by producing a surface having exceptional resistance to wear, seizure, scuffing, fatigue, and corrosion.
ARCOR® is applicable on any type and grade of steel and as the process is performed at fairly low temperatures, no distortion is expected. There is no significant change in size (less than 8 µm in diameter). The process will enhance the corrosion resistance of the steel components by forming a dense compound layer of iron nitrides along with a black iron oxide (magnetite) top layer that is covered with a rust preventive oil coating.
The compound layer hardness sits in the range of 500 HV (50 HRC) for low alloy steels up to 1200 HV (>70 HRC) in alloyed steels such as tool steels and stainless steels. This leads to improvement in wear resistance and fatigue resistance.
Underneath the compound layer the nitrogen atoms are induced into the metal to create a hard case. This hard case improves the abrasion wear and fatigue longevity of the parts that are exposed to cyclic loads.
