This extreme cooling process, using liquid nitrogen, is used to toughen and strengthen some steel alloys. These alloys may have been previously heat treated with the addition of the cryogenic treatment making then stronger and more capable of handling shock loads. This process is also used for its ability to improve corrosion resistance and toughen items such as musical instrument strings.
